Tundra Grey: quiet Turkish grey

Tundra Grey comes out of the mountains around Afyon in western Turkey, the same region that supplies most of the world’s commercial white and grey marble. It is the stone people reach for when Carrara feels too busy and a grey granite feels too hard.

What it looks like

A light-to-medium grey ground with soft white and beige veining that drifts rather than streaks. The contrast is low. Seen across a large floor it reads as a single calm tone with movement you notice on the second look, not the first — which is precisely the point.

Lot variation is real. Some blocks run warmer and beige-leaning, others cooler and closer to a true grey. Two slabs from different lots will not sit together convincingly on the same floor, so we buy and reserve by lot.

Finish changes the stone

• Polished deepens the grey and lifts the veining. Reflective, formal.
• Honed flattens it to a soft matte and is the better choice for a floor — it hides the fine scratching that a polished marble floor will pick up.
• Brushed adds a light texture and grip, worth considering for a bathroom.

Kerala-specific advice

Marble and 80%+ humidity are a manageable pairing indoors, but Tundra Grey is a calcite marble and will etch on contact with acid — lime, vinegar, tamarind, the usual Kerala kitchen. We would not put it on a kitchen worktop that sees daily cooking. On bathroom walls, floors, stair treads and vanity tops it performs well and seals easily.

Seal on installation and again annually. Clean with pH-neutral soap only; the common household acid cleaners will dull the polish within a year.
