Red Verona: the marble the Romans used first

Rosso Verona has been quarried from the Valpolicella hills west of Verona since Roman times — the same stone appears in the Verona Arena, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres still standing. Today it’s mainly cut from quarries on Monte Pastello and the slopes between Sant’Ambrogio and Monte in the Valpolicella valley, with some material also coming from the Asiago Plateau under the related name Rosso Asiago.

What it actually is, geologically

Despite the trade name, Red Verona is technically a nodular fossiliferous limestone rather than a true metamorphic marble — a distinction shared by several well-known “marbles” in the Italian stone trade. It contains fossil ammonites and small clay intrusions scattered through the surface, which read as part of the stone’s character rather than as a flaw. Measured properties put it firmly in durable-stone territory: roughly 0.12% water absorption, density around 2.638 t/m³, and compressive strength between 102 and 153 MPa wet-to-dry.

Why the colour shifts from slab to slab

The red-brown colouring comes from natural variation in iron oxide, limonite and goethite content through the deposit — which is why one slab can run pale pink while another sits at a deep, saturated red-brown, both genuinely from the same quarry. Cream and white veining runs through the background, giving real contrast against the red ground.

Where it works

Bathroom walls and floors, feature cladding, and formal commercial interiors where a warm, historically resonant red stone is the design intent — Red Verona has centuries of use in exactly that role. It is not the stone for a working kitchen countertop: like other calcite-based material, it etches on contact with kitchen acids, so we’d steer you toward granite there instead.

Living with it

Its low water absorption is a genuine asset in Kerala’s humidity, but seal on installation and annually regardless, and clean only with pH-neutral products. On a floor, honed rather than polished holds up better underfoot through the monsoon season and disguises fine wear over time.
