Bottichino Florito: the figured face of an old Italian marble

Botticino comes from a cluster of quarries around Botticino, Nuvolento, Rezzato and Serle, just outside Brescia in northern Italy — a region so significant to Italian stone that it ranks second only to Carrara for ornamental stone extraction. “Florito” (floral) is the more heavily figured grade of this marble: denser, more visible veining than the calmer standard Botticino grade quarried from the same basin.

What it looks like

An ivory-to-beige ground running toward hazelnut in places, threaded with ochre-yellow veins that are noticeably denser and more decorative in the Florito grade than in plain Botticino. The colour and vein density genuinely vary by quarry and by block — that’s normal for this stone, not a defect, but it does mean lot-matching matters if you’re covering a large continuous area.

Why a 190-million-year-old limestone is still a premium building stone

Botticino began as lime mud settling in an inland Mesozoic sea, slowly cemented and recrystallised over tens of millions of years into a remarkably compact rock. That compactness is the practical payoff: low porosity, low water absorption, and genuinely strong resistance to compression, bending and frost — properties that let this stone serve structurally in Italian buildings for centuries, not merely as a decorative face.

Where we would, and wouldn’t, put it

It performs well on bathroom walls and floors, feature cladding, and commercial lobbies where the figured veining reads as an architectural statement. We would steer you away from a working kitchen countertop — it’s still calcite marble, and calcite etches on contact with the acids (tamarind, lime, vinegar) that show up daily in a Kerala kitchen. Granite or quartzite handles that exposure far better.

Living with it

Seal on installation and again annually. Clean with a pH-neutral product only — the common household acid-based tile cleaners will dull the polish faster than normal wear ever would. On a floor, honed rather than polished is the safer choice underfoot through Kerala’s long monsoon months.
